Getting up for 8:00 classes can be hard sometimes. These past few weeks, every morning has been a battle for me to preach the gospel to myself, to be content, to not complain about little sleep or the cold walk up the hill or the busy day ahead. This morning was especially challenging: I rolled out of bed exhausted, finding myself wanting to speak sharply and only complain about everything. As I walked out of Olds this morning, I was still praying that God would give me joy for this day, that He would help me to be content in this day, that He would bring me to rest in His grace. I was surprised to find the morning pleasantly mild as I stepped out of the door. The sky was blue, and the sunrise was glowing. Walking up the sidewalk, I heard a lone bird singing in the tree. He sang and sang my whole way up the hill. It sounded like spring, it felt like spring, and it changed my morning. How kind is God to bless me with a small thing such as a loud little bird to remind me of His goodness and His faithfulness.
Sweet songbird singing in the morning hour
Waking me up to tell me how
Another day passes along
I love that simple song.

I 100% sympathize. My current job has me leaving my house at 6 AM for an hour-long drive in metro traffic, and I dread it every day. But then one morning last week, the overcast sky had cleared up for the first time in days, and as I stepped out the door it looked like the milky way was ten feet above me. Talk about perspective. :-)
Aah, there are not words to say how deeply Josh Garrels' music speaks so to my heart. His concerts for me are the epitome of Cornerstone joy - they are in a class of their own. Songbird = a truly beautiful song. Thanks for sharing, Shannon. I am so often amazed at the graciousness and kindness of our Lord. Truly wonderful. This was a dear post.

Tell me about it. I have to get up at 6:40 for 8:00 class a few times a week. It stinks. And again on Sundays too. lol. I don't really think about it the way you do though.
I feel lucky, I get to sleep in most mornings. But then the day is crammed to the gunwales with studying and books, and books and studying. :)
Thanks for this post. It's good to be reminded of the little things through which God gives us grace.
(your blog is very encouraging)

Don't forget. You are not a bird watcher.
